"Out of the Cold" is a programme which strives to respond, in a meaningful way, to the needs of the most abandoned of our city's poor and homeless people. • Send them off smiling (back packs for kids in need)

    Send them off smiling

TAKE A FROWN AND TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN
Some children dread the first day of school each September -- when the poverty line seems to be drawn most clearly. Worn clothing, no gym shoes, few or no school supplies or backpack... these children stand out against their peers. While these may seem like superficial concerns, teachers tell us that the impact can be devastating for some children. In the worst cases, the sense of shame and embarrassment set up a negative attitude towards both school and peers that undermines the child's ability to develop socially or achieve academically. Our mission is to set children in need on a more hopeful path -- by outfitting them with some basic clothing and school supplies, intended to send'em off smiling on that first day of school each September.

Waterloo Cupcake is proud to assist Send them off smiling by providing product for fund raising functions and events. To learn more about Semd them off smiling and the great work done there, please visit Send them off smiling - Kitchener

  • Pride Stables (Horseback riding to people with disabilities)

    Pride Stables

A UNIQUE PLACE WHERE HORSES HELP PEOPLE
During the summer months, Camp Pride, an 8 week integrated day camp, is in full operation with close to 200 children. During each lesson, riders learn the basics of riding a horse, depending on their abilities. The benefits of horseback riding are multidimensional. The instruction of lessons is based on sequencing, which enables each rider to learn at their own pace. Participating in weekly lessons also builds special friendships between the rider, their horse, volunteers and staff members. Therapeutic horseback riding uses the horse as a medium of therapy. The combination of the horse's movement, which simulates the human walking motion, and its higher body temperature, serves to supply passive heat massage to the riders' muscles, thereby either relaxing spastic muscles or stimulating lax muscles. Riders also participate in exercises improving their muscle strength and flexibility in their upper body.

Waterloo Cupcake is proud to assist Pride Stables by providing product for fund raising functions and events. To learn more about Pride Stables and the great work done there, please visit Pride Stables - Kitchener
